For me, the difference is what it leaves out. A normal trace kept every hair and shadow—impossible with my gun. This simplified everything to five colours but somehow kept the ears, muzzle and expression. Still unmistakably our dog.

Little update: I put a photo of my mum's house into the Studio, chose five colors and printed the tiled pattern at Staples. First time I didn't have to redraw half the lines!! Starting the tufting this weekend.

What photos work best?+

One clear subject, a simple background, good light. Pets, logos, lettering and bold illustrations work great. Busy group photos don't.

How many patterns can I make?+

As many as you want. The Studio is unlimited.

Is my photo uploaded anywhere?+

With "Faithful to photo", no: it's processed on your own device. With "Illustrated", a copy is sent securely to our illustration service to redraw it, and isn't used for anything else.

Do the patterns come pre-mirrored?+

Yes. Every projector file and print tile is already flipped for the back of the cloth. You also get a front view to check the result.

Do I need a projector?+

No. Print the tiles at home or at a copy shop, tape them together and trace.

What size rug can I make?+

Any size. You set the width in cm or inches, and the size guide shows three sizes with frame, cloth and yarn.

Which yarn should I buy?+

Each color comes with its hex code and the grams you need. Match it with any brand you like.

Can I sell rugs I make?+

Yes — from Vault patterns and from your own photos. Photos of characters or logos you don't own can't be sold.

Does it work on my phone?+

Yes, on phone, tablet and computer.
